Down with energy costs

If we watch the tv we all recognise that it is important to trim energy consumption these days. Ever increasing gas costs make it essential to get the most out of your gas boiler and gas central heating system. The typical UK family spends more or less 50% of it’s gas costs on gas boiler energy use. If you want to cut your gas costs read on as we have outlined some actions you can take.

Consider where you are using gas boilers :
Turn off the metal radiator in any rooms which are not used such as the guest room or utility room. There are no disadvantages in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the gas costs to heat your home. Seal the room off by closing the entrance door and you will have in effect contracted your home and shrunk your heating expenses.

Use the central heating not the fire :
A central heating system is much more cost-efficient than using a fire to heat one room. The flue will mean that a lot of the heat created goes outside your home, the heating boiler is much more cost-efficient for heating than an electric fire.

Use insulation to stop draughts
energy is wasted in homes due to poor insulation and draughts bringing cold air into the home. Pay particular attention to your doors and insulate any evident cracks. Block gaps in door and windows with a foam based sealer. If you live in an older home you might be stunned how often these cracks occur. If you are careful and use a wax candle flame you can detect where draughts are in a room.

Put on more shutting rather than switching up the heating :
When you sense the room is a little chilly look at putting on some more clothing in preference to switching up the room thermostat. Maintaining a 1 degree reduction on the thermostat can save up to ten% on your heating expenses.

Make good use of your curtains :
The sun is very effective at heating your house in the wintertime, when shining, if you keep the curtains opened to allow it in. Outside temperatures drop at night and your house can lose a lot of heat through the windowpanes. closing the drapes provides an extra layer of insulation and will help to trim this heat loss, this can can save you real money in the longer term. Thick curtains are better at stopping heat loss than thin ones.

The last advice for pruning your charges :
You must insulate your central heating hot water cylinder if you have one. The hot water cylinder can hold its heat throughout the daylight if insulated making water accessible for you whenever required.

Experts put metal foil in the wall space at the rear of a radiator to cut heat outflow to the outside.
