A way to clear a gas heating system

A way to clear a gas heating system

At some moment in the life-time of your fully pumped heating system you will need to empty it. To exchange the gas boiler or a metal radiator is a standard cause. Normally this task will be executed by your plumber but in some circumstances it can be performed by the experienced maintenance handyman.

In most circumstances Cleaning the central heating is executed to clean the metal radiators. Before you do anything to the actual heating radiator you should turn off the gas boiler and any gas or electric that supplies the gas boiler. Prevention of any extra water entering the central heating system is also a priority.

The tank in the attic is used to normally top up the system with water. This has a ballvalve that is the same as the one seen in your toilet water tank. As the water level rises the ball floats on the surface and shuts off the valve. If water level falls the ball, floating on the surface, also falls venting the valve and allowing more water into the central heating system. This process will need to be stopped if the gas heating system is to be fully flushed. To prevent any more water getting in the valve needs to be off.

Now take a hosepipe emptying into an outdoors clear and connect this to the outlet valve on the bottom of your metal radiator. Water will now current out of the radiator through the hosepipe into the external empty. To drain your whole central heating system you need to attach this hose pipe to one of the ground floor radiators, the lowest ones in the house. Before you commence any other work on this gas central heating system you must now check that all the water has emptied out and no other the water is entering into the radiators.

The work can be hurried up by venting the bleed valves in the top floor metal radiators. You can start work on the central heating system once all the water has emptied out.
